This is early at this point but what kind of mechanics will be used when characters level up? Do they require training from mentors or learn new skill/spells by themselves? From Volmar's point of view I am of course interested to know if mages just come up with an idea for next level spell or do they need training or perhaps have some 'target' spell they keep 'researching' during their previous level or just plain have to find new spells from other sources?

Some things will need to be taught by others, some things characters can learn on their own. Upon reaching the EP threshold for their next level the character will immediately gain the following: - Hit points (new hit die or re-roll) and any other changes according to your class advencement table.
- Any other class-based bonus (or penalty) as per class description.
- +15 Building Points.
- Stat bumps, as per advanced rules.
- Talents and Universal Skills may be bought without training.
- Weapon specialisation up to +2 may be bought without training.
Listed below are things that will typically require a week or two tutoring/training by NPCs: - Non-universal Skills.
- Proficiencies.
- Weapon specialisation above +2.
With regard to mages, I believe the book does note that upon levelling the character is required to have spent a week on research before gaining their new random spell*. Seerstone is probably a little too far for Volmar to travel each time but there is a library in Winter Haven run by a mage named Eirkk Tyraskr where you can study. Tyraskr apprenticed in Seerstone under Rowland Aldebourne around ten years ago and would probably know your uncle Wilho, so that could be why he's lets you use his library. There may be one or two other mages passing through Frithland from time to time, but Tyraskr is the only resident spellslinger. He also advise the king on arcane matters if needed. * I have seen one suggestion that allows the player to have a little more control over what their new spell might be, rather than being totally at the mercy of the GM's random roll. After the week if you do not want the spell rolled you can spend 1 BP to re-roll (and spend another week in research) and try again. You can keep re-rolling as long as you have the BPs and game-time available, until the GM rolls a spell you are happy with.
